How do you know what size grit to buy for your blast cabinet? Sizing specifications for abrasive grit are based on agreed-upon particle size distribution for each mesh or screen size. Lower mesh numbers means larger, coarser particles. Higher mesh numbers mean the particles are more fine.
Grit is sized by passing it through a series of mesh sieves. Essentially, the Grit Size is determined by how much grit passes through or is retained at certain sieve sizes. The Certified or Inspection Test Sieves each have a number corresponding to a size in the United States Standard Sieve Series (aka USS), with screen openings specified by the American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM E-11 table.
Micro Grit: Any Grit Sizes that are 240 or finer are referred to as micro grit. Because grit this fine is in the sub-sieve size range, they cannot be accurately measured by screening. Micro grit is measured by hydraulic or pneumatic methods. Conversion values for micro grit are calculated using ANSI Standard B74.18 (by sedimentation) at the 50% point.
Micro-fine grit Abrasive media with a Grit Size of 600 or finer is usually only used in wet blast cabinets.
